Magna shows the Science behind Super Heroes
Four workshops will be held throughout the day in the Phoenix room. Each workshop will last up to roughly 30 minutes. Here's some of the demos that we provide:
Whoosh Bottle/Meths Rocket Vapours from methylated spirits in a bottle is ignited, creating a fiery whoosh. The same thing is done with a bottle on a wire to launch it across the room like a rocket. This demonstration will be used to illustrate a super hero ability to fly.
Electro Magnet We have an electromagnet that can magnetise an aluminium ring, causing it to leap. There's also a metal disc that floats. This is a demontration of the powers and abilities of Magneto from X-Men.
Green Fire Tornado By adding some boric acid to our mini-fire tornado we can get get a Green Lantern style green flame.
Blue bottle By mixing some chemicals together we can make a clear liquid turn blue, just by swirling it around. (Like Colour Kid from the Legion of Substitute Heroes!)
Smoke Rings Using a cardboard box with a hole in it we can blow the smoke from our smoke machine into rings (manipulating fog like Storm from the X-Men).
Icing Sugar Flamethrower By blowing icing sugar through a flame we can create a Human Torch style flame thrower.
Burning Ice Water and Calcium Carbide together will react and release acetylene gas, so by sprinkling some Calcium Carbide over ice we can make it look like the ice is burning.
Potassium Nitrate We can use this to create a Star Sapphire style purple flame.
Riverboat Lil's Mind Reading Trick A Professor X style mind reading trick involving some simple maths.
All workshops will have a £2 entry fee and some of these workshops may differ from these examples.
