Dalek Builder and Operator Matt Allcock
It was when the TV Series returned to our screens, with the beloved machine creatures from Skaro that Matt began building his own full sized Dalek in 2005, after somehow convincing his dad that that’s a perfectly normal thing to do. The prop’s livery was originally based on the Renegade Dalek Supreme from 1988’s ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’ and remained in this livery for the two low budget fan films it starred in, UNIT Tales: The Lone Dalek (2012) and UNIT Tales Ascendancy of the Daleks (2013), which Matt wrote, directed and starred in (as both a human and the Dalek).
The Dalek prop was built in a year, but was left unfinished until the filming of the first fan-film and is mostly made of wood built up around a central plastic core. It is not a screen accurate prop but has received great reactions from the public, particularly following its invasion of Brigg marketplace early on a Sunday morning.
Recently, in 2013 the Dalek made its convention debut, the prop was given a major overhaul, the colours being altered slightly to resemble the Dalek Supreme from 1965’s ‘The Chase’ and 1965-1966’s ‘The Dalek’s Master Plan.’ Matt also built his own ring-voice modulator so as to speak whilst on the move, which led to a popular in-character and ad-lib Q&A session as the Dalek.
Despite taking a degree in Archaeology at the University of York, Matt is currently pursuing a career in script writing.
